Tensions and tempers simmer over the course of an afternoon recording session in 1920s Chicago, as the legendary "Mother of the Blues", Ma Rainey (played by the Oscar-winning Viola Davis), clashes with her controlling white manager. Meanwhile, her ambitious young cornet player Levee, played by the late Chadwick Boseman in his final performance, is determined to stake his own claim on the music industry. In the studio's claustrophobic rehearsal room, Levee's provocations stir his fellow musicians to reveal truths that will forever change the course of their lives. Based on Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson's play, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is packed with bold and blistering performances and makes a powerful legacy for the brilliant Chadwick Boseman.
